Board of Specified Jurisdiction (BSJ)

Are you interested in the Catholic education of our children?  The Office of Catholic Schools is encouraging and fostering the development of a Board of Specified Jurisdiction, a new governance model for our elementary parish school, St. Therese.

A Board of Specified Jurisdiction recognizes the expertise and dedication present in the laity; at the same time it recognizes that the school’s viability and vitality for the long-term rest on broadening the school’s base of support in the community.

A Board of Specified Jurisdiction (or BSJ) has authority for decision-making for the school in specified areas; this authority is delegated by the Superintendent of Catholic Schools in the areas of vision and mission; institutional development; finance and facilities; and marketing and recruitment.  The BSJ is empowered to cooperate and collaborate with the principal and the Superintendent in the work of administering and leading the school.

Are you interested in bringing your skills, interests, commitment, and experience to this endeavor?  Or, do you have previous board experience from business and/or non-profit boards?  Do you know someone else who might be so skilled and interested?

The Board is empowered in these specified areas:

*Ministry Effectiveness (Mission/Vision/Faith based Core Values)
*Member Development
*Planning
*Fiscal Management (Finances and Facilities)
*Institutional Advancement (Communication, Development, Marketing,
  Enrollment/Recruitment and Retention

It is recommended that a BSJ is composed of 11 to 21 members.  An individual is appointed by the Superintendent for specified terms, and is selected based upon a certain skill set and expertise in one of the above mentioned area.  At least 80% of the Board members must be Catholic.  Individuals with these skill sets include:

*Parishioners
*Alumini/ae and parents of alumni/ae
*Leaders within the neighborhood, business, and professional communities
*Parents of current students (up to 25%)

An application for the Board may be obtained by contacting the school office and is available on the parish website.  If you are interested in becoming a member, please complete the information and return to Office of Catholic Schools.  Appointment of members and their training will be scheduled for spring.

Thank you for considering this important service to St. Therese School.
